Metabolic and nutritional concerns are addressed in the daily care of the NICU patient. Bedside nurses need to increase knowledge of these issues to intervene appropriately.

Following this course the learner will be able to:

1. Discuss care priorities related to common NICU procedures.

2. Discuss the use of TPN for nutritional support of the neonate and demonstrate knowledge via case studies.

3. Describe the nutritional needs of term and preterm NICU patients

4. Demonstrate the ability to apply breastfeeding support in the NICU via case study responses.

5. State interventions to support feeding in the neonate with dysphagia.

6. Discuss sources of evidence and finalize problem statement
