This course was designed to give learners a better understanding of team members' roles, available resources, and understanding of the bereavement process from all aspects of care.

Target Audience

Registered Nurses 

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, the learner will be able to:

  • identify what we are able to offer our families in regards to legacy items, comfort, and support services during the bereavement process in the NICU.
  • describe how to provide post-mortem care and the associated forms and documentation required for all patient deaths. 
  • recognize ways to improve their communication skills regarding what to expect during an infant death, including appropriate word choice and common phrases to avoid.
  • describe the dying process of a neonate and how to prepare families for what to expect during this time
  • identify the various support measures in place for staff experiencing a patient loss in the NICU.
