This 3-day course is for nurses who will be providing care to trauma patients at UPMC Mercy 

Target Audience

 Nurses Caring for Trauma patients..

Learning Objectives

The participant will be able to identify neuro and spine trauma injuries and nursing assessment of these injuries.

The participant will discuss the use of whole blood administration in the care of trauma patients.

The participant will describe the role of pre- hospital care in the outcomes of trauma patients.

The participant will identify the 6 chest trauma injuries that will kill a trauma patient and nursing assessment of these injuries.

The participant will be able to discuss the role of ethic consult in trauma patient care.

The participant will be able to discuss the role of mechanism of injury in trauma patients.

The participant will be able to identify what injuries and vital signs make a Level 1 trauma patient.

The participants will discuss the role of mortality and morbidity review of trauma patient's deaths.

The participant will be able to identify their role as a nurse in organ donation, referral and maintenance of potential organ donor.

The participant will discuss how to identify stress from caring for trauma patients and how to deal with the stress.

The participant will discuss the care of the geriatric trauma patients and assessment challenges in caring for geriatric trauma patients.

The participant will discuss post discharge of the trauma patient to rehab to prepare for home.

The participant will identify how to assess and how to manage the trauma patient's airway.

The participant will describe the assessment of an orthopedic trauma patients. 

The participant will identify the assessment of burn wounds and treatment of burns.

The participant will be able to assess pediatric, bariatric and pregnant trauma patients and nursing care for their injuries.

The participant will identify one intervention to prevention and infection in trauma patient with a foley catheter in place. 

The participant will identify the assessment of a trauma patient with abdominal trauma from blunt or penetrating injuries.

The participant will identify the early signs of shock in a trauma patient and nursing interventions.
