OAPP Grand Rounds – My Patient Needs to Lose Weight - Now What? An Overview of Obesity Treatment (WISER)
A lack of awareness among healthcare providers regarding the classification of obesity as a chronic disease and its comprehensive management. Many providers may not be adequately educated on BMI indications or contraindications for specific weight-loss interventions. Insufficient interprofessional collaboration in creating individualized, multidisciplinary weight-loss plans for patients. Limited implementation of evidence-based obesity management guidelines across healthcare systems, resulting in inconsistent care delivery and suboptimal patient outcomes.
Providers may not fully understand the pathophysiology of obesity as a chronic disease or the importance of integrating pharmacological options into treatment plans. Limited familiarity with BMI indications and contraindications for various weight-loss interventions. Challenges in identifying and prescribing the appropriate weight-loss medications based on patient history, co-morbidities, and potential side effects. Failure to consistently implement patient-centered approaches in obesity treatment, including evaluating medication side effects and monitoring outcomes effectively. Insufficient counseling of patients regarding lifestyle changes in conjunction with pharmacotherapy.
