OAPP Grand Rounds - Primary Care Precision Medicine: Providing Genetics Care in the Neighborhood (WISER)

This training is developed to address the current problems in practice that need addressing include the underutilization of genetic information in primary care settings, leading to missed opportunities for early detection, prevention, and personalized treatment of genetic conditions. There's also a lack of integration of genetic services into routine primary care, which results in disparities in access to genetics care, especially in underserved communities. Additionally, there is a general hesitancy among primary care providers (PCPs) to engage with genetic testing and counseling due to perceived complexities and uncertainties about the interpretation and implications of genetic information.

This activity will significantly impact the interprofessional healthcare team by enhancing collaborative care approaches, improving the integration of genetic services into primary care, and fostering a more holistic understanding of patient health. It will enable PCPs to more effectively communicate genetic risks and benefits to patients, leading to better-informed decision-making. Additionally, it will encourage stronger partnerships between primary care providers, genetic counselors, and specialists, ensuring a more coordinated and comprehensive approach to patient care. This, in turn, can lead to improved patient outcomes, greater patient satisfaction, and a reduction in healthcare disparities, especially in underserved communities where access to specialized genetic services may be limited.
