Learning Objectives
• Describe eligibility requirements and key regulations for home hospice, UPMC Advanced Illness Care Program and Palliative Care at UPMC Senior Care Facilities
• Recognize potential gaps in care as patients transfer between settings, including communication between providers, medication reconciliation, treatments and emotional support for patients and families.
• Define dependence, addiction, and tolerance.
• Use universal precautions for managing opioid therapy, including screening tools to assess for risk of opioid misuse and urine drug screens to monitor for diversion.
• Describe how to approach pain treatment in patients taking methadone or buprenorphine for addiction.
• Describe at least two common spiritual or existential concerns of patients and / or families at end of life
• Describe at least two communication strategies to respond to existential suffering
• Differentiate positive versus negative religious coping
