Giving nurses and social workers a large, well-defined role in supporting families of patients at high risk of death improves family psychological outcomes, improves patient outcomes, and improves nurse-physician collaboration.

• Define what happens in a first meeting with family

• Demonstrate two core communication skills when placed in a hypothetical situation

• Identify the family’s question and concerns prior to the family meeting

• Demonstrate how to conduct a pre-family meeting

• Verbalize the skills required for daily check-ins with family

• Demonstrate the skills required for daily check-ins with family

• Verbalize how to integrate core communication skills into their practice
