• Define motivational interviewing (MI) and describe the MI approach to promoting behavior change.

• List the four elements of the MI spirit and describe how you would apply them in practice.

• Recognize the “righting reflex” and describe the importance of resisting it.

• Use the POLAR*S framework to conduct an intervention to learn more about a patient’s drug and/or alcohol use and facilitate behavior change.

• Discuss how to identify and intervene in cases where there is substance use, describe how to discuss substance use with patients, and connect patients to evidence-based treatment services.
