This course was designed because there has been an increase in the number of new hires, in addition to student and nurse intern precepting requests, which has led to an increased need for Preceptor support and education.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Discuss 3 myths about precepting
  • Recognize the 7 roles of Preceptors according to the Ulrich Precepting Model
  • Identify and interpret the 3 most significant roles of the Ulrich Precepting Model.
  • Demonstrate Preceptorship according to the expectations of a Preceptor throughout the orientation process.
  • Demonstrate Preceptorship according to the expectations of the Preceptee, Unit Leaders, and Educators throughout the orientation process.
  • Explain the 3 types of Preceptees and differentiate between their scopes of practice. 
  • Identify 3 quality and safety measures that a Preceptor-Preceptee team can apply to enhance the patient experience at CHP.
  • Identify with own preceptee experience and interact with group on ways to use this experience now
  • Identify 3 essential thinking skills of Preceptors
  • Identify the 1 key method for Preceptors to influence Preceptee development of critical thinking skills
  • Identify 3 core skill sets of a Preceptee and list 2 examples of procedures during which these skill sets can be taught.
  • Identify the 5 steps to utilizing the One-Minute Preceptor model while precepting
  • Complete 1 role-play scenario in the Preceptor role using the One-Minute Preceptor model.
  • List 3 tools you will use when precepting as a result of this workshop.
