The Progressive Care Course is aimed to help new/inexperienced nurses gain confidence and knowledge in taking care of a stepdown patient with a higher acuity level. Topics covered include stepdown infusions and titrations, sepsis management, ABG interpretation, and advanced respiratory therapies and management.

Target Audience

This course is open to registered nurses at UPMC St. Margaret who provide care to stepdown patients.

Learning Objectives

  • Summarize concepts related to the care of the patient with respiratory disorders
  • Practice set-up of various oxygen delivery devices
  • Interpret arterial blood gas values and translate into clinical scenarios
  • Summarize the states of shock and discuss the sepsis response system
  • Discuss common medication infusions in the progressive care patient and practice applying titrations in scenarios
  • Demonstrate learned material in high-fidelity simulation in preparation for clinical practice
