Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Define SBIRT components and how they differ from past approaches in addressing substance abuse
  2. Describe the impact of alcohol and other drug-related problems in the US
  3. Identify the options for screening patients for substance use
  4. Describe the process of conducting a brief intervention with patients
  5. Identify the elements necessary in making an appropriate referral to substance abuse treatment.
  6. Describe the situational, behavioral, medical, and psychiatric considerations that impact medical decision-making in regard to pharmacotherapy for substance use disorders
  7. Identify the pharmacotherapies available for management and/or treatment of specific substance use disorders
  8. Discuss the risks and benefits of pharmacotherapies approved for treatment of substance use disorders
  9. Describe the assessment process involved in initiating pharmacotherapy to treat substance use disorders.
