Stem Cell Transplant Course Fall 2024

November 6, 2024 to November 13, 2024

Target Audience

The course is designed for registered nurses and other healthcare professionals involved in caring for patients undergoing stem cell transplant.  Six months to one year of oncology experience and the completion of the Foundations to Practice Series (Pathophysiology of Cancer, Cancer Treatment Modalities, and the Immune System; Overview of Solid Tumors; Symptom Management of Patients with Cancer; Oncology Emergencies and Advanced Cancer Care Issues; and Hematological Malignancies, and Antineoplastic Therapy and Immunotherapy Course or other introductory cancer courses are strongly recommended. 

Learning Objectives

The learner will be able to:

  1. Discuss the role of stem cell transplant in cancer and other diseases.
  2. Compare and contrast the role of autologous, allogeneic, haploidentical, and cord blood transplant in treating hematological malignancies.
  3. Understand preparative regimen chemotherapy and what preparative regimen is indicated based on disease and other comorbidities.
  4. Understand the transfusion needs surrounding patients who need or receive a stem cell transplant. 
  5. Describe appropriate interventions for the management of transplant associated complications including acute and chronic graft verse host disease, infection, and organ toxicities.
  6. Describe the process of pre transplant evaluation, mobilization, cell collection, cell infusion, and troubleshooting infusion related complications for transplant patients and donors. 
  7. Understand HLA typing and donor selection for allogeneic and haploidentical transplants. 
  8. Understand the purpose and importance of immunosuppression in the stem cell transplant population. 
  9. Identify the role of rehabilitation resources in patients undergoing stem cell transplant.
  10. Understand the short term and long term follow up requirements and role of survivorship care planning, including patient education across the transplant continuum of care. 
  11. Recall the clinical background of chimeric antigen receptor modified T-cells and the diseases indicated for this type of treatment.
  12. Discuss the outpatient management of a stem cell transplant patient.
  13. Recall the nursing care considerations of a patient receiving CAR T-cell therapy.
