This is the third session in a five-part SUD series.

The purpose of this educational presentation is to review the NIDA Quick Screen and important client centered engagement strategies.

Learning Objectives

 
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
 
  • Introduce the SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral to Treatment) model, with particular focus on screening and a framework for brief intervention using the NIDA Quick Screen
  • Review results of the case exemplar highlighting administering the NIDA and identification of the member’s stage of change
  • Illustrate (or practice) the use of client centered engagement strategies and harm reduction statements

Michele Gordon, Phd, LSW
Program Manager
Michele Gordon is a licensed social worker and PhD with 16 years of clinical experience working with individuals with complex comorbid physical and behavioral health conditions, within clinical settings, community-based mental health programs, and managed care environments. Michele has been a member of the Clinical Training & Education team for almost six years, and designs and facilitates a variety behavioral health training. Additionally, Michele co-facilitates Mental Health First Aid, an evidence-based training, for the Clinical Affairs department. Michele is also a social adjunct professor with the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work, where she teaches ‘Health Systems & Public Policy’ in the master’s program.
 
Michael Connell, MS
Clinical Engagement Coordinator
Michael Connell is the Clinical Engagement Coordinator for UPMC Health Plan’s Health Coaching Training Team.  Mike has a master’s degree in Exercise Physiology and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh.   He was a Health Coach at the UPMC Health Plan for six years where he had extensive experience coaching members to adopt healthy behaviors, including smoking cessation, physical activity, nutrition, stress management, and weight management.  Mike was responsible for training the engagement and coaching skills of the lifestyle health coach team from 2010 to 2015.  He is currently responsible for improving the engagement and Motivational Interviewing skills for clinical staff at the UPMC Health Plan, including RNs, Health Coaches, and Case Managers.
