Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Implement effective antimicrobial stewardship by recognizing key factors in antibiotic prescribing, reassessing antimicrobial therapy, and adhering to UPMC’s Standard Precautions.
- Manage bloodborne pathogen risks and prevent device-related injury by identifying pathogen types, transmission methods, and practicing consistent hand hygiene.
- Assess and address fraud and abuse by defining these concepts, identifying examples, recognizing applicable nationwide policies, and locating reporting options.
- Promote a positive workplace environment by defining microaffirmations, distinguishing them from microaggressions, and incorporating them into daily interactions.
- Recognize contrast reaction types, apply treatment strategies, and implement appropriate emergency response protocols.
- Respond to emergencies and comply with EMTALA by having a plan for weapons alerts, knowing appropriate actions during emergent situations, and handling patients in the Emergency Department according to regulations.
- Ensure a safe environment at UPMC by maintaining safety protocols, handling equipment and utility system malfunctions.
- Identify policies for protecting patient information, determine best practices for handling sensitive information, and articulate UPMC’s vision for Patient Safety.
- Define workplace violence and harassment, identify roles and responsibilities related to workplace threats or violence, and outline the process for ordering restraints
