Understanding the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Continuum and Matching Patients with the Appropriate Level of Care

The ASAM Criteria serves as a comprehensive set of clinical standards for managing addiction treatment. It guides clinicians in making informed decisions about patient admission, continuing care, and transfer or discharge. Here are the key points:

  1. Continuous Assessment: Rather than a one-time process, the ASAM Criteria emphasizes ongoing assessment of individual needs.
  2. Treatment Planning: Clinicians collaborate with patients to create personalized treatment plans.
  3. Non-Linear Progression: Treatment doesn’t always follow a linear path between levels of care.
  4. Diverse Services: The terms “rehab” and “treatment” encompass various services, including medication, therapy, and meetings.
  5. Resource Access: Individuals can seek resources and guidance from their county’s Single County Authority (SCA) https://www.ddap.pa.gov/pages/default.aspx.
