The Trauma Nurse Course .... 

combines on-line learning (Part 1), classroom lectures (Part 2) and hands-on skills sessions geared toward educating staff on the acute care of the trauma patient.

The topics presented during the 3 classes include:  

~ Mechanism of Injury, ~ Prehospital Care, ~ Initial Trauma Assessment and Management, ~ Head Trauma, Neuro Assessment, C-Spine Immobilization, ~ Thorough discussions of Trauma specific to each body system, ~ Psychological Aspects of Trauma, ~ Trauma care with specific considerations for Pregnancy,  Pediatrics and the Elderly  ~ Thermal Injury, ~ Organ and Tissue Donation, ~ Substance abuse, ~ Nutritional Needs, ~ Rehabilitation Concepts, ~ Anesthesia agents and Pain management

Target Audience

This program is required for nurses within their 1st year of hire at UPMC Hamot, who are working in Trauma Care Areas  (including ED, OR, PACU, TNICU, 4MRIU, 4 South, Floatpool and Pediatrics)

1. Describe the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation (PTSF) and its standards and accreditation process.

2. Describe how institution-specific practices relate to the PTSF standards requirements.

Trauma Nurse Course On-line Module:  Genitourinary Trauma

3. Describe the pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of Genitourinary trauma

4. Relate nursing care and management of Genitourinary trauma through the continuum of care; from acute phase of care through discharge planning.  

5. Describe complication and interventions as they relate to the special needs of the patient with acute Genitourinary injury  

6. Identify significant performance improvement data that affects current practice in trauma care

Trauma Nurse Course On-line Module:   Geriatric Trauma 

7. Define the geriatric trauma patient based on physiologic changes related to the aging process.

8. Describe the common causes of injury and prevention strategy in the geriatric trauma population.

9. Define the legal issues related to geriatric trauma patients.

10. Describe the patterns of injury that are suggestive of abuse.

11. Identify screening and reporting responsibilities in abuse situations.

12. Identify the nurse’s role in the assessment and reporting of suspected abuse and neglect.

24. Recognize Signs and symptoms and management strategies for shock

Musculoskelatal Trauma (Extremity, Pelvic, G&D considerations)

25. Describe the pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of Musculoskelatal trauma

26. Relate nursing care and management of muskuloskelatal trauma through the continuum of care; from acute phase of care through discharge planning.  

27.  Describe complication and interventions as they relate to the special needs of the patient with acute Musculoskelatal injury

Airway management and Anesthesia Agents 

29. Discuss the patient’s response to anesthetic agents in relation to the injury and to operative and post-operative management.

Thoracic Trauma (Include Penetrating & Blunt)

31. Relate nursing care and management of Thoracic trauma through the continuum of care; from acute phase of care through discharge planning.

Pediatric Trauma  / Include Growth & Dev’t,

37. Outline a basic pediatric trauma nursing assessment in collaboration with the ATLS standardized approach.

Domestic Violence

Thermal Injury

Spinal Cord Trauma / Include Spinal Shock

Maxillofacial and Ocular Trauma

Abdominal Trauma Include Blunt vs. Penetrating

54. Describe the pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of Abdominal Trauma

Pregnancy in Trauma

58. Describe the normal physiologic changes of pregnancy and how the changes relate to clinical management of traumatic injury.

Operative Care

59. Describe the perioperative phase as it relates to the operative management of traumatic injury and to predisposition of complications (occurrences).

Organ / Tissue Donation / CORE

60. Describe the role of the nurse in the care of and evaluation for organ and tissue donation

Psychosocial Support and Crisis intervention

61. Discuss nursing interventions to meet the spiritual, cultural, and psychosocial needs of the trauma patient and family.

Care Management Rehab in Trauma

64. Discuss rehabilitation issues in relation to traumatic injuries.

The maximum number of hours awarded for this Continuing Nursing Education activity is 24.0 contact hours. Contact hours will be given for participants who successfully complete all continuing education (CE) activities.

2)  Attend all 3 days of lecture  

3) Pass the final exam
