This self‑directed course explains how federal privacy and security laws apply to your role at UPMC and outlines your responsibilities for protecting protected health information in everyday work situations. Through practical examples and policy guidance, you will learn how to safeguard confidential information, recognize potential privacy or security issues, and take appropriate action if a concern or breach is suspected.
Target Audience
Physicians and non-physician practitioners who provide clinical services, or staff and students who are not employed by UPMC but encounter protected health information at UPMC facilities.
Learning Objectives
As a result of participating in this activity, the learner will be able to:
- Improve their management of the responsibilities of privacy and security as related to protecting patient information
- Implement safeguards for protecting patient information
- Closely follow recommended processes and procedures in the event that they suspect a breach may have occurred
- Access and apply University of Pittsburgh policies pertaining to privacy and security compliance
