UPMC Urgent Care Advanced Practice Provider Transition to Practice Program

As novice APPs begin their careers in retail medicine, there is significant role change and increased responsibility. With this transition, many providers experience anxiety, fear, and burnout which can lead to subsequent poor job satisfaction, performance, and retention. By providing retail medicine education gradually throughout the onboarding process, APPs can feel confidence and improved satisfaction in their role. In addition, the organization can feel assured that mentoring is standardized, and new providers feel adequate preparation for their role as a primary care provider.

This course will have a profound impact on inter-professional collaboration and communication. It will give the APP the necessary tools to build competence and confidence at a steady rate to be able to provide high-quality care to our patients.

Target Audience

The target audience for this training is practicing physicians, nurses, physician assistants and other healthcare or academic professionals with an interest in retail medicine/primary care.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this continuing education program, the participant should be able to:

  • Define key components of APP Professional Practice.
  • Employ a full range of health care services to include health promotion, disease prevention, health protection, anticipatory guidance, counseling, and disease management to individuals and families.
  • Identify, diagnose, and treat key components in the acutely ill patient in the outpatient setting.
  • Demonstrate the highest level of accountability when providing care to the individual and family.
  • Integrate appropriate technologies for patient education to facilitate shared decision making with the individual/family.
  • Communicate effectively by demonstrating empathy and respectful behavior when interacting with other healthcare professionals.
  • Improve skills to provide the optimal and methodological workup through continuing education.
