Critical Care Fellowship Session 2, 10/23/2024

This is a follow-up program to Critical Care Orientation, approximately 12 months following the critical care course.  The content of this course is based on feedback from key stakeholders and registered nurses to build on critical care concepts briefly introduced during orientation.

Orientation is intended to provide a foundation of core critical care concepts so that the new nurse can function independently and intervene appropriately.  The Critical Care Fellowship will provide the novice nurse with the opportunity to expand his or her knowledge of complex critical care concepts to improve their nursing practice.

 

The Critical Care Fellowship was initially developed to provide more advance critical care knowledge for the new nurse who had several months of clinical time and experience.  It has evolved and is currently based on feedback from nursing evaluations, unit directors, and nurse educator feedback, as well as informal conversations with novice nurses, preceptors, and nursing leaders  indicating that additional education was needed.

Learning Objectives

ICU

Learners will be able to discuss the CIWA tool for medication management for the patient in alcohol withdrawal and the need to escalate care to critical care unit.

Learners will be able to verbalize the importance and process of performing a passive leg raise.

Learners will be to interpret arterial waveforms to discern treatment of hypotension.

Learners will be able to identify the appropriate vasopressor used in septic shock and nursing considerations of vasopressors.

Learners will be able to discuss the purpose, management and documentation of spontaneous awakening trials.

Learner will be able to identify the evolution of ischemic stroke to hemorrhagic and nursing interventions.

Learners will be able to discuss basic pathophysiology and concepts of advanced devices including ECMO, CRRT, etc.

Learners will be able discuss the care for patients with various types of temporary pacemakers.

Learners will review low volume, high risk medications seen in the critical care setting.

 

IMCU

Learners will be able to identify the three major tracheostomy emergencies and the appropriate nursing interventions.

Learners will be able to verbalize correct procedure in determining if patient needs RRT v. starting BLS.

Leaners will be able to distinguish the differences between delirium and dementia using the CAM assessment tool.

Learner will review toxicology and common medications used to treat overdose patients.
