Decision-Making in Pregnancy: Ethical Issues

The purpose of this program is to explore current perinatal ethical issues in the context of life-limiting fetal diagnoses such as trisomy 18.  Perinatal palliative care will be introduced and discussed as it relates to the ethical issues.

Learning Objectives

  1. Recall current perinatal ethical issues as well as limitations of classic approaches, such as the “problem with autonomy in fetal medicine”
  2. Discuss “life-limiting fetal diagnoses” such as trisomy 18 and how these diagnoses help to frame the perinatal ethical discussion
  3. Define and explain the concept of perinatal palliative care and discuss how it can provide structure for navigating complicated pregnancies
  4. Recall recommendations to bioethicists and health care providers for navigating challenging perinatal ethical cases
