Emergency Department Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder

September 7, 2022

The United States continues to face an unprecedented crisis of overdose deaths with a more than 30% increase over the last 2 years. A coordinated, multi-faceted approach to patient care is needed to support our patients and reduce the risk of death associated with drug use, particularly opioid use. The emergency department has continued to play a pivotal role in identifying patients at risk of overdose death and initiating evidence-based substance use treatment. The body of evidence and regulatory environment continues to evolve necessitating provider education to fully capitalize on existing resources and treatment strategies.
