Intimate Partner Violence: The Silent Secret

SafeNet’s Domestic Violence Prevention Medical Committee promotes education and professional development around issues of Intimate Partner Violence.
The goal of this initiative is to raise awareness of the impact that IPV has on our community, while promoting action to improve responses to this important social issue.

Learning Objectives

• Identify non- lethal signs of strangulation • Identify post mortem signs of strangulation • Explain medical importance of identifying NFS in legal settings including bail hearings • Recognize the importance of documentation and proper care of evidence for prosecution • Identify power and control through strangulation • Describe the spectrum of abuse rather than focusing on only the physical • Demonstrate increased compassion for victims of abuse • Recognize potential symptoms of non-physical forms of abuse • Discuss the need to elicit truthful responses about the extent of abuse • Recall ways to provide information in ways less likely to make the patient defensive • Recognize how the intersection of technology and collaboration has innovated service delivery for agencies and victims.
