Lifetime Management of the Aorta

January 7, 2023

Aortic disease can manifest itself in various clinical presentations while being insidious in nature. It can stem from a wide range of underlying causes including genetic and familial conditions, congenital anomalies and acquired disease. Thus, comprehensive, lifelong management of the aorta by a multidisciplinary and integrated team of experts affords these complex patients the greatest likelihood of optimal clinical outcomes.

Target Audience

This course is designed for pediatric and adult cardiologists, cardiac surgeons; adult congenital heart diseases specialists; emergency medicine providers; cardiothoracic radiologists; vascular surgeons; advanced practice providers; nurses; medical students; residents and fellows; basic science and clinical research faculty and professionals; data and quality improvement healthcare professionals; healthcare administrators; and any other individuals interested in lifelong care of patients with aortic disease.

In addition, aortic patients and their families and other loved ones at all ages of the lifespan are invited to join our Aorta Patient and Family Support Breakout Session.

Learning Objectives

Lifetime Management of the Aorta brings together experts in pediatric and adult cardiology, cardiac surgery, adult congenital heart disease, genetics, cardiovascular imaging, cardio-obstetrics, vascular surgery and subspecialists in orthopedics and ophthalmology to explore current gold standard management techniques, strategies for overcoming complex medical management issues, technical pearls for challenging surgical interventions, and the importance of the provision of support resources for treatment of the aortic patient across the lifespan. Importantly, this course will explore the critical programmatic elements needed to facilitate truly integrated and comprehensive aortic care.

After participating in this educational event, learners can expect to:
•    Develop an understanding of the role of genetics in development of aortic disease, and the importance of familial screening.
•    Recognize the importance of lifelong surveillance for aortic patients.
•    Employ imaging techniques that are best suited to image the aorta.
•    Recognize the presentation of acute aortic syndromes
•    For surgeons, the utilization of technical pearls in the treatment of complex aortic root, arch and thoracoabdominal aneurysms and dissection
•    Incorporate ancillary specialties into the care management plans for aortic patients.
•    Introduce aortic patients to critical support group resources.
•    Utilize UPMC's comprehensive, multi-disciplinary, and longitudinal model of aortic care to improve clinical outcomes and quality of life for aortic patients at their center.
