Hyperkalemia is an electrolyte abnormality that can contribute to life-threatening arrhythmias. Currently, there is no standardization in the treatment of hyperkalemia at our institution and anecdotal evidence suggests that variances exist in the management of this electrolyte abnormality. Define hyperkalemia and summarize the epidemiology, pathophysiology, risk factors, clinical presentation, and treatment.
Compare and contrast the oral potassium binders for patients with hyperkalemia and review the evidence for their use.
Design an effective treatment regimen for a patient with hyperkalemia based on patient-specific factors.

UPMC Pinnacle Pharmacists will have a better understanding about the treatment options for hyperkalemia and will be able to accurately assess medication orders for both appropriateness and effectiveness according to patient specific factors.
