Methotrexate for Ectopic Pregnancy

Methotrexate is an effective treatment for ectopic pregnancy, an emergent condition that needs to be assessed quickly and efficiently. While we currently have an order set and therapy plan that help guide clinical decisions, further education will help facilitate prompt treatment. 

UPMC Pinnacle pharmacists will have a better understanding of ectopic pregnancy and the urgency it presents.  They will be able to quickly assess patient orders for methotrexate and appropriately intervene if necessary.

Describe ectopic pregnancy and summarize risk factors, clinical presentation, and medications for treatment

Identify treatment parameters to ensure safe administration of methotrexate.

Recognize an appropriate dose of methotrexate for ectopic pregnancy.
