MI Skills Building: Exploring the Four Tasks of MI: Planning
This session will cover the planning task and process of motivational interviewing. Once the “what” and “why” of change have been mapped out, it’s time to turn to the “how” of change. The planning task answers the question of how the client will implement their change plan.

- Define the planning task and discuss how to identify when there enough why and how talk to move to planning
- Describe strategies to “test the water” for planning and how to avoid the “fixing reflex” in planning
- Apply planning skills in a case study exercise
Pharmacy Objectives:
- Evaluate personal ability to prompt patient change via the planning process of motivational interviewing
- Apply elements of the planning process to clinical scenarios to assess their usefulness in eliciting patient change and preparation

Amanda Gabarda, EdD, MPH, NBC-HWC
Dr. Gabarda is the Senior Director of Clinical Training & Development at UPMC Health Plan where she is responsible for the creation, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of training and skill development of lifestyle health coaches and care managers. She has a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Exercise Science from Slippery Rock University, a Master of Public Health from Walden University, and a Doctor of Education in Health and Physical Activity from the University of Pittsburgh. Ms. Gabarda is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, a National Board-Certified Health & Wellness Coach, and a Certified Health Education Specialist and has 15+ years of experience in health promotion and health coaching.
Renee Greenwald, MS, NBC-HWC
Renee Greenwald is the Manager of Clinical Training & Quality Assurance at UPMC Health Plan where she is responsible for supporting the Health Coach Academy team with developing the Motivational Interviewing skillset of UPMC Health Plan clinicians through various training and Quality Assurance Review. She has a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Slippery Rock University and a Master of Science in Exercise Science and Health Promotion, specializing in wellness and fitness and wellness coaching from PennWest California. Renee is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and is a Nationally Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach with about 5 years of experience in health coaching.
