This Motivational Interviewing skills building will support staff with a model for using person-centered skills when exploring Social Determinates of Health with members and using the Social Determinates of Health Assessment. Learners will then review case studies and practice using common case scenarios in their setting with practice and application.

  1. Discuss the purpose of a care manager, coach, or clinician in member engagement

  2. List the Social Determinates of Health as well as the benefits of using a person-centered approach in administering the Social Determinates of Health assessment

  3. Recall key Motivational Interviewing skills that aid in administering assessments in a person-centered way

  4. Demonstrate the ability to utilize a person-centered approach when completing a social determinants of health assessment with a member

Dr. Michele Gordon has more than 15 years of behavioral health experience through work in various levels of psychiatric treatment, spanning clinical and community-based services.  Dr. Gordon has worked in the managed care industry for the past seven years, for a physical and behavioral health MCO.  She currently fills the role of Program Manager at UPMC Health Plan, where her primary responsibilities include the design and facilitation behavioral health clinical training series centered on engagement, assessment and intervention with members with complex physical and behavior health comorbidities, informing behavioral health core competencies for care management clinical education, leading the health plan's Behavioral Health Training and Competency Development workgroup and participating in collaborative workgroups between UPMC Health Plan and Community Care Behavioral Health specific to training, care management synergies and suicide prevention and intervention. Dr. Gordon earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and Psychology (dual major), and a master's degree from social work, from the University of Pittsburgh.  She earned her PhD in Community Engagement from Point Park University. 
 
Michael J. Connell, MS
UPMC Health Plan Clinical Engagement Coordinator
Mr. Connell is the Clinical Engagement Coordinator for UPMC Health Plan’s Clinical Education Team. Mr. Connell has a master’s degree in Exercise Physiology and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Connell was a Health Coach at the UPMC Health Plan for six years where he had extensive experience coaching members to adopt healthy behaviors, including smoking cessation, physical activity, nutrition, stress management, and weight management. Mr. Connell was responsible for training the engagement and coaching skills of the lifestyle health coach team from 2010 to 2015. Mr. Connell is currently responsible for improving the engagement and Motivational Interviewing skills for clinical staff at the UPMC Health Plan, including RNs, Health Coaches, and Case Managers.
 
Indira Stokes, MPH, CHES, NBC-HWC
UPMC Health Plan Clinical Engagement Coordinator
Indira Stokes is a Clinical Engagement Coordinator at UPMC Health Plan where she is responsible for training, empowering, and the skill development of health coaches and care managers.  She has a bachelor's in Biology and Economics from the University of Pittsburgh and a master's in Public Health, specializing in behavioral and community health from the University of Pittsburgh. Indira is a Certified Health Education Specialist and a Nationally Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach with over 5 years experience in health coaching. 
 
 

In support of improving patient care, the University of Pittsburgh is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

CCM CE will be provided:  2 CE  - CCM COA will be sent via email from UPMC Health Plan nurse planner

As a Jointly Accredited Organization, University of Pittsburgh is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. University of Pittsburgh maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 2 continuing education credits.
