Emergency Medicine - Oncology Nursing Training
UPMC Shadyside Hospital is the oncology hub for patients seeking care due to its proximity to UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. UPMC Shadyside Hospital has a 50-bed emergency department (ED) that cares for more than 50,000 patients annually. It is no surprise that approximately 25% of visits are for oncology related issues. This led to a collaboration between Hillman Cancer Center and UPMC Shadyside’s emergency department. The plan was to have oncology trained Advance Practice Providers (APPs) care for this complex population. Staff RNs were given specialized training on how to treat these patients and how to recognize certain treatment related side effects and emergencies. The oncology ED was originally unveiled in 2018. As the program evolved, the ONC ED moved to the Green Zone in the ED. The zone is more secluded and can accommodate more oncology patients. The zone is staffed by three nurses and an oncology specialized APP Monday through Friday.
The goal of these educational opportunities is to offer oncology specific teachings that will allow our staff both new and seasoned the ability to feel comfortable when caring for these patients.
