Sticky Staph: Managing Persistent MSSA Bacteremia
This one-hour presentation will review the pathophysiology, resistance patterns, and virulence mechanisms of methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA), with a focus on persistent bacteremia. This activity will help pharmacists to strengthen antimicrobial stewardship efforts, refine recommendations regarding treatment duration and beta-lactam optimization, and make evidence-based decisions about combination therapy.
Target Audience
Pharmacist
Learning Objectives
1. Establish the resistance and virulence mechanisms of MSSA.
2. Determine treatment duration based on microbiologic clearance and clinical workup for MSSA bacteremia.
3. Evaluate the role of combination therapy for persistent MSSA bacteremia.
4. Integrate evidence-based treatment principles for Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia into the management of a patient case.
