This activity will review and discuss The Michigan Appropriateness Guide for Intravenous Catheters, allowing for better clinical decision-making in selecting vascular access devices for patient care. This approach addresses the reliance on opinion-based device selection by promoting the use of evidence-based practice to guide and support appropriate device choice. The supporting documentation for this activity will be the published The Michigan Appropriateness Guide for Intravenous Catheters (MAGIC) by Chopra et al. 2015 and the Infusion Nursing Society Standards of Practice 9th edition.

After attending this presentation, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe the purpose, scope, and key recommendations of the Michigan Appropriateness Guide for Intravenous Catheters (MAGIC) and the Infusion Nursing Society (INS) Standards of Practice, 9th edition. •
  2. Apply evidence-based criteria from MAGIC and INS Standards to select the most appropriate vascular access device for common patient care scenarios. •
  3. Recognize the potential patient safety risks and complications associated with inappropriate vascular access device selection. •
  4. Incorporate MAGIC and INS guideline recommendations into daily clinical decision-making to improve patient outcomes and standardize practice.
