The Pittsburgh Schizophrenia Conference is an annual meeting at which the advances in schizophrenia research and treatment are reviewed by experts in the field.

Target Audience
Who Should Attend:
The conference is designed to disseminate the latest clinical and research findings to a wide audience: psychiatrists and other mental health clinicians, including nurses, pharmacists, social workers, psychologists, service coordinators, researchers, patients and their relatives, mental health policy administrators and others who intend to keep current regarding treatment and research in schizophrenia.
Learning Objectives
- Describe the impact of negative symptoms in schizophrenia and evaluate the use of Behavioral Activation interventions, including implementation strategies, and evidence supporting their efficacy for promoting active lifestyles and functional recovery.
- Evaluate the role of muscarinic signaling in schizophrenia and apply evidence-based strategies for selecting and integrating newly approved non-dopaminergic therapies into individualized treatment plans.
- Assess and implement long-acting injectable antipsychotic therapies by selecting appropriate candidates, medications, and administration strategies, while applying evidence-based resources and best practices to improve patient outcomes and treatment adherence.
- Describe the impact of genetic risk factors on the development, pathophysiology, and symptoms of schizophrenia and how these might be useful in improving prevention and treatment approaches.
- Evaluate candidates for anticholinergic deprescribing and apply evidence-based strategies and decision-support tools informed by results from a multisite implementation trial.

Gerard E. Hogarty Excellence in Schizophrenia Research Memorial Award
Professor Gerard Hogarty was a faculty member of the Department of Psychiatry and a member of the UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital for more than 30 years. Until his passing in 2006, Professor Hogarty pursued important questions related to the nature and treatment of schizophrenia – namely relapse prevention and inter-episodic social function. His career in clinical research led to major advancements in the treatment of individuals with schizophrenia and his work continues to be recognized both nationally and internationally. In addition to his research endeavors, Professor Hogarty was an incredibly talented teacher and mentor who played a significant role in the career development of many respected researchers and clinicians in the field.
