PittPharmacy Preceptor Module 7: Do You Have Time to Speak with the Pharmacist? Initiating Conversations About Substance Use-Online

Preceptors of today’s student pharmacists are both new and experienced practitioners, working in clinics, hospitals, specialty sites, and/or community pharmacies. It is critical that the keep abreast of standards and guidelines for experiential learning from accreditation bodies, as well as gain knowledge and understanding of our University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy experiential learning curriculum. This module is part of a series of video lectures for preceptors to gain knowledge and skills related to the PittPharmacy program, accreditation standards, precepting resources, and strategies for success.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this continuing pharmacy education program, the participant should be able to:

  • Discuss how and why the PharmD curriculum at PittPharmacy is designed to prepare students to address colleagues and patients at risk for substance misuse and abuse.
  • Define the components of the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) process.
  • Present the definitions of a “"standard drink”" and low risk guidelines related to alcohol use.
  • Identify substance use risk through the use of validated screening instruments.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use motivational interviewing skills to carry out a brief intervention.
  • Describe how SBIRT can assist in addressing opioid use.
