OAPP Psychiatric Meds - what every provider should know
Many APPs across both medical and surgical specialties routinely encounter patients on psychiatric medications but may lack the comfort or expertise to manage side effects, recognize interactions, or understand when to adjust or escalate care. This leads to fragmented management, missed safety considerations (e.g., QT prolongation, serotonin syndrome), and over-reliance on psychiatric consultation for issues that could be managed independently. At the team level, this contributes to communication gaps, delayed care, and unnecessary consult burden.
Learning Objectives
Increase patient outcomes by utilizing outcomes based measurement for psychiatric medication trials.
Improve patient experience by identifying and choosing medications with least potential side effects.
Improve outcomes by identifying when therapy should be combined with medications. Identify risks and benefits of prescribing psychiatric medications.
