Ostomy Care Associate Course (OCA) Fall 2023 Cohort 6

The Ostomy Care Associate (OCA) Program, which is a Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses (WOCN®) Society-endorsed educational program geared toward non-specialty licensed nurses. The OCA course is a continuing education program that will improve patient outcomes by enhancing the WOC nurse ostomy team. The course prepares non-specialty nurses to provide basic ostomy care to improve outcomes for your patients. If you are a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse or a physician with an interest in ostomy care, you are eligible to take part in this comprehensive certificate program! 

Earn 27 Continuing Education Credits and a certificate verifying that you’ve completed the program. Contact hours are only available to nurses.

The course is web based, asynchronous educational program that guides the participant through the program utilizing narrated PowerPoint presentation and videos. All coursework is to be completed on your own time including the two 8-hours live competency days unless otherwise arranged with your unit manager. 

Course coordinators are available to answer any questions you might have along the way. After completing the lessons, you’ll take a timed online test and participant in a clinical skills competency test. 

Once received, applications will be reviewed, and a notification email will be sent to accepted participants that have been accepted into this cohort.

After you receive your acceptance notification, you will receive payment information. After we receive notification of payment, the course coordinators will register you into the course. Shortly before the online course starts, you will receive an email from 'WOCN Support' and the subject is 'WOCN Continuing Education Program Invitation.'  explaining “How to access the course.” Please contact Janet Mullen at mulljl2@upmc.edu if you have any questions about this process.

Target Audience

The OCA Program is for non-specialty licensed ostomy care providers, such as:
•    Licensed health care providers.
•    LPN’s/LVN’s.
•    Non-baccalaureate RN’s.
•    Baccalaureate prepared RN’s and master’s prepared APN’s who do not wish to specialize but want adequate knowledge in ostomy care.
•    Physicians and other clinicians who want adequate knowledge in ostomy care.

3.    Accreditation refers to educational content only and does not imply ANCC, CBRN or the WOCN Society endorsement of any product or service. 
4.    Participants who complete this course will be awarded 27.00 contact hours (for nurses).
