PHQ9 & GAD-7: Engagement
The GAD-7 and PHQ-9 screening tools are widely used across the health plan’s clinical teams, to assess members for the presence of symptoms associated with depression or generalized anxiety. This educational activity will provide staff with engagement tips and strategies to further support staff in the completion of an accurate, effective, and efficient screening and assessment of members who display signs and/or symptoms of general anxiety disorder and/or depression.

- Recognize strategies for creating a therapeutic space for engagement (therapeutic techniques)
- Illustrate engagement strategies for question nine of the PHQ-9
- Identify engagement tips for providing support when further assessment is recommended

Laura Francis has more than 25 years of experience in the behavioral health field. She has expertise in outpatient assessment and treatment, case management, and health coaching in community mental health and managed care settings. Laura manages the behavioral health, clinical navigation, and digital coaching teams at UPMC Health Plan, and is responsible for program and workflow development focused on supporting the emotional health and wellness of UPMC Health Plan members.
Laura earned a bachelor's degree in Psychology from the Pennsylvania State University and a master's degree in Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh. She is a Licensed Social Worker in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

As a Jointly Accredited Organization, University of Pittsburgh is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. University of Pittsburgh maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 2 continuing education credits.
