Preparing for your Clinical Student
Preceptors are often busy clinicians without formal precepting training. This course aims to address the gaps that exist in preparing for the student that will be precepted. This course provides the information need to successfully prepare for your new clinical student.

This course is designed for Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physicians, and Physician Assistants
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
Orienting and Preparing for an APP Student
- Review some examples of options for an orientation presentation and their pros/cons
- Describe common student requirements prior to rotation start
- Review the important elements of orientation and student onboarding
- Review ideas on preparing the clinical environment for an APP student
- Review ideas on preparing your leadership, direct/indirect clinical team, and patients for an APP student
- Develop your Day One Orientation Checklist
Introducing your Patients to the Clinical Learner
- Define who from the medical team will provide notification to patients regarding students
- Compare and contrast between inpatient and outpatient settings on how patients are educated on student participation
- Develop a plan for what the student will and will not do as part of the patient encounter
- Incorporate patients into the student's learning experience
- Explore potential barriers to student participation in patient care
