Pulse: Farewell to the Swell: Management of ACE inhibitor-induced angioedema
ACE inhibitor-induced angioedema accounts for approximately 30% of all angioedema cases, but no medications currently have FDA approval for this indication. Medications commonly used for histamine-mediated angioedema are not effective, and other medications with potential benefit are expensive with limited high-quality evidence. This presentation will increase pharmacists’ knowledge of medications used for ACE inhibitor-induced angioedema and their benefits in this life threatening event.
Target Audience
Pharmacist
Learning Objectives
1. Describe the mechanism by which ACE inhibitors induce angioedema.
2. Identify angioedema therapies with proven benefit for improving airway management and reducing symptom duration.
3. Recognize medications with increased risk of drug-induced angioedema following an ACE inhibitor-induced event.
