Pulse: Stabilization to Sustained Recovery: Optimizing Antipsychotic Treatment After First Episode Psychosis

April 2, 2026

Guidelines recommend continuation of antipsychotics for 1-2 years after first episode psychosis (FEP) due to increased risk of relapse on discontinuation. Many patients desire to taper off antipsychotics earlier than this time frame, and the benefits of treatment must be balanced with the long-term adverse effects of antipsychotics. This presentation aims to provide pharmacists with evidence-based strategies for treatment deescalation following FEP remission.

Target Audience

Pharmacist

Learning Objectives

1. Describe maintenance treatment strategies in first episode psychosis (FEP).
2. Discuss literature on long-term outcomes of deescalation of maintenance treatment following FEP remission.
3. Identify clinical predictors for successful treatment deescalation in FEP.
