Rest Assured: Sleep Medicine for the Primary Care Provider
This educational activity will benefit the interprofessional healthcare team by strengthening the communication and multidisciplinary collaboration between sleep medicine and primary care providers. It will also improve the primary care providers’ education and knowledge about diagnosing and managing common sleep disorders including obstructive sleep apnea, chronic insomnia, hypersomnia, and restless leg syndrome, resulting in better treatment of a larger population of patients in the community with chronic health concerns.
Learning Objectives
1. Recognize alternative treatment options for obstructive sleep apnea apart from PAP therapy and educate patients on these alternatives.
2. Understand treatment options for chronic insomnia including behavioral interventions and pharmacologic agents, as well as understand when each is justified and can be applied in the clinical setting.
3. Summarize most updated guidelines based on evidence-based practices on common sleep disorders such as restless leg syndrome, insomnia, hypersomnia, and obstructive sleep apnea.
