Support for Patients and Families on the Grief Continuum: An Education for Hospice and Palliative Professionals

June 20, 2025

This education session aims to provide a foundational understanding of grief and how healthcare professionals can support it. This education is tailored to the needs of interdisciplinary palliative and hospice care teams, among other medical professionals. Adjustments can be made based on the specific needs, experiences, and education level of the participants.

This training teaches a basic understanding of grief and the grief experience and introduces the principles of providing support and counseling (as distinguished from therapy). We consider grieving to include those with long term illness who are experiencing the changes that occur in their life due to illness, people who are anticipating a death (anticipatory grief), people who are preparing for their own death (preparatory grief) and the bereaved who are served by hospice bereavement professionals for a minimum of 12 months after a death. Prolonged Grief Disorder is an important concept to introduce this topic, however, we do not seek to provide certification covering this aspect of grief or support in this session.
