Target Audience

Physicians and Advance Practive Providers not employed directly by UPMC.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Implement effective antimicrobial stewardship by recognizing key factors in antibiotic prescribing, reassessing antimicrobial therapy, and adhering to UPMC’s Standard Precautions.
  • Manage bloodborne pathogen risks and prevent device-related injury by identifying pathogen types, transmission methods, and practicing consistent hand hygiene.
  • Assess and address fraud and abuse by defining these concepts, identifying examples, recognizing applicable nationwide policies, and locating reporting options.
  • Promote a positive workplace environment by defining microaffirmations, distinguishing them from microaggressions, and incorporating them into daily interactions.
  • Respond to emergencies and comply with EMTALA by having a plan for weapons alerts, knowing appropriate actions during emergent situations, and handling patients in the Emergency Department according to regulations.
  • Ensure a safe environment at UPMC by maintaining safety protocols, handling equipment and utility system malfunctions, and identifying warning signs of fatigue.
  • Identify policies for protecting patient information, determine best practices for handling sensitive information, and articulate UPMC’s vision for Patient Safety.
  • Define workplace violence and harassment, identify roles and responsibilities related to workplace threats or violence, and outline the process for ordering restraints

Physician Assistant (AAPA)

The University of Pittsburgh has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 4.75 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation. 

Other health care professionals will receive a certificate of attendance confirming the number of contact hours commensurate with the extent of participation in this activity.
