TEACHING TECHNIQUES 101

Preceptors are often busy clinicians without formal precepting training. This course aims to address the gaps that exist in clinical precepting teaching techniques. This course provides the information need to successfully utilize best practice in clinical teaching,

Target Audience

This course is designed for Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physicians, and Physician Assistants

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Articulate important characteristics to learn about their student at the start of a rotation
  • Structure a learning plan designed together with the student for the rotation.
  • List approaches for filling knowledge gaps and clinical skill gaps.
  • Provide examples of different kinds of feedback.
  • Troubleshoot a student who does not seem to be progressing or has evidence of highly concerning knowledge gaps
  • Identify what the One Minute Preceptor teaching method is and how it can be used in your clinical rotation
  • Describe the Five Micro Skills of the One Minute Preceptor teaching method.
  • Review the Ask-Tell-Ask Feedback Model Learn to apply the OMP teaching method and Ask-Tell-Ask feedback model in clinical practice through application to examples
