Perioperative Ultrasound Symposium and Workshops

June 12, 2020 to June 14, 2020

The University of Pittsburgh Physicians Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Center for Continuing Education will sponsor the Perioperative Ultrasound Symposium and Workshops. This meeting will focus on enhancing the knowledge and skills of physicians using point-of-care ultrasound with an emphasis on echocardiography, lung ultrasound, assessment of gastric contents and vascular ultrasound, as well as use of ultrasound to guide peripheral nerve blockade in the trunk and extremities. The program is notable for its comprehensive approach to the use of ultrasound for both diagnostic purposes and to guide specific therapeutic interventions.  This symposium consists of both workshops and lectures. Basic transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) bootcamp is intended to help noncardiac anesthesiologists to learn basic TEE skills to evaluate hemodynamic instability/hypoxemia during perioperative period. This is also aimed to prepare the trainees and physicians for the National Board of Echocardiography basic TEE examination.

Target Audience

This CME offering is designed to unite anesthesiologists, surgeons, intensivists, and critical care, emergency medicine, and other acute care and perioperative medicine physicians and trainees in a collaborative educational program.

Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of the program, attendees should be able to:

  • Understand the four standard views to image the heart with transthoracic ultrasound; diagnose common pathologic states such as hypovolemia, pump failure, cardiac tamponade, and severe valvular dysfunction
  • Use ultrasound to image the lung, recognizing normal sonographic features; identify how pathologic pulmonary states would appear, including interstitial syndrome, pulmonary edema, consolidation, and pleural effusion
  • Utilize ultrasound imaging to evaluate gastric contents and assess the impact of these contents on the risk of aspiration during anesthesia
  • Use ultrasound to evaluate vascular integrity, specifically to exclude deep venous thrombosis in the veins of the lower extremities
  • Utilize ultrasound to effectively identify and cannulate central veins
  • Understand musculoskeletal sonoanatomy in the extremities to identify peripheral nerves
  • Utilize ultrasound to guide needle placement and injectate deposition near nerves in the extremities for peripheral nerve blockade
  • Identify the sonoanatomy of various tissue planes in the trunk to facilitate plane blocks such as TAP block, quadratus lumborum block, PECs block, serratus plane block, and erector spinae plane block
  • Help trainees and physicians to successfully pass the National Board of Echocardiography examinations
