Understanding Addiction Social Work
Currently, there are a wide range of backgrounds for staff working within the Clinical Care Coordination and Discharge Planning department, some of whom have not had much experience working with patients who are struggling with substance use disorders., yet it is part of our role in discharge planning.
Staff do not always have the knowledge and education needed about diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders. They may also not be aware of how Addiction Social Work and the STARS teamwork within the hospital setting.
Having a better understanding of substance use disorders within our department will help facilitate better communication with the medical team about the care and discharge plans for our patients with substance use disorders.
