UPMC Hanover Maternity Education Day 2024 9.17.24

Nurses working in obstetrics face many challenges every day maintaining evidence-based, up-to-date knowledge in their constantly evolving practice.  Applying knowledge and skill into practice is essential for best patient out comes, for both experienced and novice nurses.

This activity will allow nursing staff to become more familiar with specific conditions/equipment, such as Diabetes Mellitus, Insulin infusions, Endotool, Sepsis, Orthopedic devices, Hypertensive spectrum, Amniotic Fluid Embolism, Maternal Code, Malignant Hyperthermia, Yellowfin Stirrups, X-ray board, fluid warmer, and the Gentherm warmer. By gaining a greater awareness of these conditions/equipment, nursing staff will be able to interact and more collaboratively work with other professions (ie providers, lab, respiratory therapy, etc. ) leading to improved patient outcomes.

Learning Objectives

Insulin/EndoTool

After completing the Insulin/Endotool station, staff will

  • Identify signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia.
  • Understand the appropriate IV pump set up for an insulin drip during the intrapartum period.
  • Understand the intrapartum nursing management of the diabetic mother and fetus.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use EndoTool for insulin drip management during the intrapartum period.

Orthopedic Station

After completing the orthopedic skills station, staff will

  •  Implement strategies for effectively managing pain and discomfort in orthopedic postoperative patients using appropriate pain management techniques
  • Understand the importance of proper positioning and movement in preventing postoperative complications and promoting healing in orthopedic patients 

 

Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy

After completing the hypertensive disorders in pregnancy station, staff will be able to

  • Describe hypertension in pregnancy
  • Explain the causes of hypertension in pregnancy
  • Outline the management strategies for hypertension in pregnancy
  • Summarize a structured interprofessional team approach to provide effective care to and appropriate surveillance of pregnant patients with hypertension.

Amniotic Fluid Embolism and Maternal Code

After completing the AFE/Maternal Code station, staff will

  • Demonstrate an increase in knowledge and recognition of the signs and symptoms of an amniotic fluid embolism to ensure prompt diagnosis and intervention, thereby improving maternal and fetal outcomes. 
  • Identify ways to enhance the ability of medical teams to implement effective management and treatment protocols for amniotic fluid embolism, focusing on rapid stabilization, supportive care, and minimizing complications. 

Fins, X-ray board

After completing the OR station, staff will

  • Master the proper positioning and securement of patients using Yellowfin stirrups to ensure patient comfort, safety, and optimal surgical access while minimizing the risk of nerve injuries and pressure sores.
  • Demonstrate the ability to correctly position and utilize the X-ray plate during surgical procedures to obtain clear, accurate imaging, ensuring precise diagnostic and intraoperative guidance without compromising patient safety.

Malignant Hyperthermia

After completing the Malignant Hyperthermia station, staff will

  • Identify signs & symptoms of malignant hyperthermia
  •  Describe the management and treatment of malignant hyperthermia

Fluid Warmer

  • Demonstrate competency in the setup, operation, and maintenance of the Ranger Fluid Warmer to deliver temperature-controlled fluids efficiently, thereby maintaining patient normothermia and reducing the risk of hypothermia during surgical procedures.

GenTherm Warmer

  • Develop proficiency in using the Gentherm system to regulate patient body temperature during surgery, ensuring optimal thermal management and preventing perioperative temperature-related complications.

Sepsis

  • Identify signs & symptoms of Sepsis
  • Describe the management and treatment of Sepsis

Fit testing/TCB/Restraints/Hand Hygiene

After completing this station, staff will be able to

  • Identify when N95 masks are required and why
  • Demonstrate proper TCB testing on the newborn
  • Demonstrate proper restraint placement and removal for mitts, soft limb, and TAT restraints
  • Discuss when hand hygiene needs to be completed
  • Demonstrate proper hand hygiene
