UPMC Passavant Respiratory Seminar - 2025
ARDS - Speakers presenting on the latest research on ARDS ventilator management, finding optimal PEEP, sedation, mobility, etc. as well as nursing interventions for patients with ARDS, including the use of paralytics, proning and ECMO. Post of Care and Complications in Esophageal and Lung Surgery patients - Reviewing the latest research on post op care to help with healing of surgical sites in Esophageal procedures as well as possible complications and interventions. AVAPS and the use of non-invasive ventilation and other respiratory modalities to improve the quality of life for patients with neuromuscular diseases that are chronic or diagnosed later in life such as ALS. Respiratory is a large part of the care of these patients and helping them with ventilation issues, airway clearance and avoiding tracheostomy placement and becoming vent dependent. Sleep Disorders - reviewing various sleep disorders and the importance of diagnostic testing and identifying appropriate modalities of ventilation and/or therapy for patients with sleep disorders. Vaping - Discussion the prevalence of Vaping in our society and some of the new data that shows the health risks associated with vaping as well as resources available to assist with quiting the use of vapes. Breathe PA - Present and discuss the programs available through Breathe Pa. Medication assistance, equipment, even air conditioning assistance.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
Better care for and manage patients from a multidisciplinary aspect according to the best practices identified.
Better Ventilation management for patients with ARDS and finding the appropriate modalities and therapies for patients to decrease ventilatory days and ICU days.
Better management of patients with neuromuscular diseases.
RTs and APPs will have the tools to understand, implement and manage patients with respiratory failure due to their disease process and use techniques that are proven to help this patient population.
RTs and RNs at the bedside will be able to implement therapy according to best practices for patients that are post op from esophageal and lung surgery that is beneficial to the patient and maximizing their recovery and healing process.
Identify patients that would benefit from Breathe Pa resources and be able to advocate for patients and educate patients on the resources available to them outside the hospital. Hospitals would be able to put into place a program developed for patients with pulmonary and sleep disorders to provide them education on disease management and financial resources.
