UPMC Hamot 2023 APPalooza APP Pearls for Practice
Join your colleagues to learn about the most recent updates related to a variety of fields affecting your patients. Workshops throughout the day allow opportunities to build skills for success. Ample time for questions from the audience has been built into each presentation.
Target Audience
This program is designed specifically for advanced practice providers interested in updating their practice and refreshing their knowledge related to common disease states, comorbidities and complications.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
- Recognize awareness of the extent of renal disease
- Describe the three types of dialysis and the pros, cons and contraindications for each
- Familiarize oneself with the types of dialysis access
- Discuss percutaneous management and limitations for abscesses in the chest, abdomen and pelvis.
- Review the need for surgical management for abscesses in the chest, abdomen and pelvis.
- Describe the general principals of antimicrobial therapy.
- Review ordering and obtaining appropriate diagnostic imaging to evaluate for abscess.
- Describe normal physiologic pubertal development
- Describe differences between puberty and adrenarche
- Describe abnormal puberty (precocious puberty and delayed puberty)
- Define the term “Substance Use Disorder” and identify the criteria used to diagnose this condition.
- Provide an overview of addiction neurobiology.
- Outline the pharmacology of a variety of different substances, including alcohol, sedatives, opioids, stimulants, caffeine, nicotine, cannabinoids, hallucinogens, dissociatives, steroids, and novel entities.
- Utilize preferred, non-stigmatizing language when referring to and interacting with patients with substance use disorder.
- Implement screening and brief intervention for those patients struggling with substances of use.
- Recognize how to link a client to treatment, including types of and intensities of treatment modalities.
- Identify signs and symptoms of acute and chronic UC
- Review testing & procedures to diagnose UC
- Identify the medications used for treating acute and chronic UC
- Identify five strategies to evaluate interpersonal effectiveness
- Describe five assertive communication techniques
- Apply assertive communication to real-world examples
- Explore evidence-based coping strategies to deploy in everyday life
- Identify strategies and resources for setting boundaries and getting help with workplace communication
- Identify the three most common types of wounds seen in outpatient care settings
- Explain interventions the Primary Care Provider can implement to improve healing of cutaneous wounds
- Discuss how to correctly use three advanced wound care dressings to improve wound healing
- Recognize cutaneous malignancies masquerading as wounds
- Describe pathophysiology of marrow suppression in patient underactive treatment.
- Recognize education regarding bone marrow suppression and necessary precautions for their clients undergoing treatment.
- Describe treatment modalities pursued in marrow suppression
- Recognize signs and symptoms that may be present following a concussion
- Discuss common resources used for work up, management and treatment of concussions
- Identify BPH in the primary care setting
- Describe the evaluation of a patient with BPH
- Outline the management options available for BPH
- Determine when to initiate treatment for BPH
- Discuss when to refer to a urologist

Registrants will be e-mailed a Zoom link 3 days prior to the conference. Virtual attendees will be able to ask questions using the Q&A function in Zoom.
ATTIRE
Attire for the conference is business casual. Since meeting room temperatures can vary, it is recommended that you bring a light jacket or sweater with you to the conference.
