UPMC Hamot 2024 Neuroscience Conference
Need
Early diagnosis and treatment of stroke and other neurologic disorders can have a profound impact on patient outcomes and mortality. The diagnosis, management, treatment, and rehabilitation of diseases of the brain and spine is rapidly changing. It is vital that primary care practitioners, nurses, therapists, and other advanced practice providers maintain an awareness of the differential diagnoses, as well as new and emerging treatment options for these.
Goal
This annual activity will focus on the neurosciences, including stroke and other disorders of the brain, as well as foster networking and collaboration among clinical disciplines within the region. Both current and future treatment options will be addressed, along with management issues and prevention of possible complications. Case presentations will complement didactic presentations.
Target Audience
Primary care physicians, internists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants; physical, occupational, and speech therapists; and other advanced practice providers will benefit from attendance at this activity.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participants should be able to:
- Identify long-term neurological effects of stroke.
- Describe a patient’s personal experience to explain stroke.
- Assess the impact stroke has on one’s daily life.
- Identify the signs and symptoms of a posterior circulation stroke and how to treat them acutely.
- Describe the long-term deficits caused by posterior circulation strokes.
- Describe the prognosis and rehabilitation process of posterior circulation stroke.
- Identify the correlation between intense rehabilitation and significant gains in swallowing and communicative function.
- Summarize the benefits of continued acute rehab through various stages of stroke recovery.
- Describe team collaboration and consistency to achieve high-level outcomes using evidence-based treatment techniques.
- Identify the normal anatomical disposition.
- Identify pathological processes and patterns which aid in determining the etiology of cerebrovascular disease.
- Describe neuroimaging modalities used in common practice.
- Identify common cerebrovascular diseases.
- Describe diagnostic criteria for multiple sclerosis.
- List the latest approved medications for multiple sclerosis and their mechanisms.
- Assess the safety and effectiveness of emerging MS therapies based on recent clinical data.
- Define Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) and differentiate it from other related disorders.
- List common symptoms and clinical signs of FND.
- Describe general and discipline-specific treatment principles for FND.
- Define Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
- Identify how to diagnose Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
- List new treatments for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
- Describe the newest science in the treatment of cerebrovascular occlusion.
- Identify treatment options for distal cerebrovascular occlusions.
- Summarize case studies demonstrating risks and benefits of mechanical thrombectomy in Large and Distal Medium Vessel Occlusion.
- Identify the home health referral process.
- Describe strategies for supporting patient independence and assisting families and caregivers in managing patient care post-discharge.
- Compare the pros and cons of providing therapy in the home setting versus other care environments.
- Describe how durable medical equipment (DME) is obtained to aid in home care.
