Urinary Tract Infection Symposium

On Thursday, March 14, UPMC will host the Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) Symposium, presented by the UPMC Infectious Diseases Quality Team (ID Quality). This internal learning event will share science and develop best practices at UPMC related to UTI.  Speakers will include experts from across the system, including Infection Prevention, Lab, Antimicrobial Stewardship, and Pharmacy. The event also features Dr. Sonali Advani from Duke University School of Medicine, who is an international thought leader in UTI.

Asymptomatic Bacteriuria: Truth, Myths and Clincial Blunders

1.    Discuss 2019 asymptomatic bacteriuria guidelines and key points for clinicians  
2.    Quantify the frequency of asymptomatic bacteriuria in various populations and impact on patient outcomes

Deconstructing the Urinalysis: Unraveling the Mystery of Urine Cultures for the Bedside

1.    Describe symptoms ascribed to urinary tract infections versus non-infectious conditions 
2.    Analyze the urinalysis test, including interpretation for infectious and non-infectious conditions 
3.    Explain opportunities for improving patient assessment of UTI vs non-UTI 

Diagnostic Stewardship of Urine Culture Testing

1.    Describe the Urine Infection Test intervention, including purpose, methods, and findings. 
2.    Review other diagnostic stewardship interventions currently in place at UPMC or described in the literature that can be implemented in the EHR or laboratory

1.    Enumerate treatment options for urinary tract infections, including complicated infections defined as catheter-associated urinary tract infections and infections due to multi-drug resistant organisms 
2.    Consider implications of treatment selection choice on recurrence of urinary tract infection 
3.    Determine opportunities for transitions of care and outpatient stewardship related to UTI treatment, and any LOS implications
 
Synthesizing Learning: Focus on Healthcare-Associated Infection Reduction 
Graham Snyder, MD MS
1.    Highlight salient features of the preceding four talks as they pertain to healthcare-associated infection reduction efforts at UPMC 
2.    Facilitate Q&A on extended topics related to urine culture diagnostic stewardship and healthcare-associated infection reduction
