Wake Me Up When It's All Over: Analgesia and Sedation in the ICU

This activity will help provide all pharmacists at UPMC in Central PA hospitals with a baseline knowledge of the management of analgesia and sedation in ICU patients. This activity will highlight various sedative agents as well as their mechanism of action, relevant pharmacokinetic properties, and adverse effects. Overall, this will allow pharmacists to become comfortable with the new ICU pain and sedation order set and help provide recommendations to optimize drug therapy.

• Objective #1: Describe mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetic (PK) properties, and adverse effects of analgesic and sedative medications used in the intensive care unit (ICU)

• Objective #2: Analyze patient-specific factors to guide optimal selection of analgesic and sedative medications

• Objective #3: Evaluate relevant clinical evidence guiding sedation principles and neuromuscular blocking agent (NMBA) use

• Objective #4: Identify place in therapy and clinical considerations with the use of NMBAs
